GOP strategists are plotting on ways to ban leading presidential candidate Donald Trump from participating in the GOP debates.
The entry of the straight-talking billionaire has re-energized a dull 2016 presidential race, and exposed the GOP establishments preferred candidates Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio as hopelessly out-of-touch with mainstream Republicans on immigration and trade.
The party elites are reportedly terrified by his rise in the polls even though those same polls are showing voters who sat out the past two cycles freshly interested in this cycles race all because of Trump.
Above: 15,000 supporters turned out to see Donald Trump in Arizona in the
largest rally to date by any presidential candidate.
The GOP-e bosses thought that Trumps tough talk on illegal alien crime and Mexico, as well as his misquoted comments on John McCain, would have done him in. But the polls have shown they have either had little effect, or in fact have increased his popularity.
So now they will apparently willing to go to any lengths to stop Trump.
The New York Times (via GWP) reported:
Fear remains in some of the campaigns that Mr. Trump will target their candidates in the lead up to the debate or at the event itself.
Many national Republican officials are increasingly resigned to Mr. Trumps looming presence. At a meeting of the Republican Governors Association this week in Aspen, Colo., donors and operatives mused about how to prevent him from hijacking the debate.
One idea that came up was to urge three leading candidates Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor; Mr. Walker; and Senator Marco Rubio of Florida to band together and state that they would not participate in any debate in which Mr. Trump was present, using his refusal to rule out a third-party bid as a pretext for taking such a hard line. The thinking, according to a Republican involved in the conversations, was that the lesser-funded prospects who have been eclipsed by Mr. Trump would follow suit, and the TV networks airing the debates would be forced to bar Mr. Trump in order to have a full complement of candidates.
This just shows their almost unfathomable stupidity. Trying to ban Trump would only increase his appeal, and hurt their control…in other words a win, win for conservatives.
One commenter envisioned a potential Trumpian response:
Suppose they dont let Trump participate.
And then suppose he uses his own money to buy the same hour of time on another network.
And suppose he then proceeds to hold a town meeting with vets, people harassed by the IRS, victims of illegal aliens and so forth.
Which channel would get more viewers?
Highlights from which would be all over the internet the next day?
Whose statements would be the subject of every news show?
I love it! Your move, GOP-e…
